How we do therapy

Therapy and Wellness Icon

At Nurturing Roots, we know that true healing begins with the nervous system. When your body feels safe, your mind and emotions have the space to shift and grow. Our approach is rooted in nervous system regulation and the principles of Polyvagal Theory, helping you understand and work with your body’s natural responses to stress, not against them.

We draw from evidence-based practices like EMDR for trauma processing, somatic therapy to release what’s held in the body, and CBT/DBT strategies to build practical skills for everyday challenges. Breathwork, mindfulness, and nature-based sessions like walk-and-talk therapy invite grounding, presence, and a deeper sense of connection.

By weaving these tools together, we create a personalized path that supports your mind, body, and spirit, helping you not just cope, but truly heal and flourish.

Therapy That Meets You Where You Are and Grows With You

Therapy at Nurturing Roots is a space to feel seen, supported, and gently guided toward the changes you’re ready to make. Children’s Therapy

At Nurturing Roots, we create a safe, supportive space for little ones to explore and express their feelings while building skills for resilience, confidence, and healthy relationships. We work closely with children and their families, helping them find ways to communicate more openly, strengthen emotional well-being, and lay a strong foundation for a thriving future.

From their very first smiles and cries, children are learning how to express themselves and navigate life’s ups and downs. As toddlers, they begin building their language of emotions, pointing, clapping, or using words to share excitement, joy, or frustration. By the time they start school, they’re exploring new ways to communicate their feelings and understand the emotions of others. Emotional development is a vital part of growing up, it shapes how children see themselves, connect with others, and respond to life’s challenges.

Walk & Talk Therapy

Walk and Talk Therapy offers all the benefits of traditional talk therapy, while adding the grounding, restorative effects of movement and nature. As we walk side by side, the gentle rhythm of movement can help release feel-good brain chemicals, ease tension in the body, and quiet the mind. Fresh air, sunshine, and the beauty of the outdoors create a natural sense of calm, making it easier to reflect, process, and simply breathe.

This approach can be especially supportive if you feel more comfortable moving than sitting, or if being in nature helps you feel safe and at ease. Together, we can explore challenges like anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, or self-esteem while benefiting from the healing environment around us.

And if the weather, your energy levels, or life’s demands make walking less appealing on a certain day, that’s okay. Walk and Talk Therapy is simply one option we can choose when it feels right for you.

EMDR Intensives

EMDR Intensives offer a focused, accelerated way to work through trauma, distressing memories, and deeply rooted patterns that may be holding you back. Rather than spacing sessions weeks apart, intensives take place in longer, concentrated blocks of time, allowing us to stay with the work, maintain momentum, and move through layers of healing more efficiently.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a highly researched, evidence-based approach that helps the brain and body reprocess difficult experiences in a way that reduces emotional distress and restores a sense of safety. Guided by nervous-system-informed care, EMDR intensives create a safe container to address what’s been too heavy to carry, whether it’s a single event or a series of experiences that have built up over time.

This approach can be beneficial if you want to make meaningful progress in a shorter period, are feeling “stuck” in certain areas despite ongoing therapy, or are navigating a specific life event that needs focused, compassionate attention. By the end of your intensive, you may notice lighter emotional weight, more clarity, and a renewed sense of calm within yourself.

What do EMDR Intensives look like and how long are they?

EMDR Intensives are extended therapy sessions, usually 2 to 4 hours, that allow for deeper, focused processing in one sitting. They include preparation, EMDR processing at your pace, and integration time so you leave feeling grounded. This format can be especially helpful for addressing specific concerns, processing trauma, or reducing the impact of long-standing triggers more efficiently.

Is therapy covered by my benefits?

Our team includes Registered Social Workers and CRPO-Registered Psychotherapists, and sessions with them are typically covered by most extended healthcare benefit plans.

We do not bill insurance companies directly, but we provide detailed receipts by email upon payment, so you can easily submit them to your provider for reimbursement.

If you’re unsure about your coverage, we encourage you to check with your insurance company before your first session, we’re happy to guide you through what to ask so you feel confident moving forward.

What should I expect for my child’s therapy sessions?

When a child begins therapy at Nurturing Roots, our first priority is to create a safe, welcoming space where they can feel at ease. The first few sessions are focused on building trust and getting to know your child’s unique personality, strengths, and needs.

We use developmentally appropriate approaches, such as play, creative expression, movement, or talking, to help your child share their experiences in a way that feels natural to them. Along the way, we’ll explore what’s been challenging, support them in learning regulation tools, and help them build confidence in navigating their emotions and relationships.

Parents are an important part of the process. You can expect regular check-ins to share insights, celebrate progress, and learn ways to support your child’s growth at home.
