What is EMDR Therapy, and How Can it Help?

At Nurturing Roots, we believe that healing is not just about moving past the past — it’s about finding ways to feel safe, steady, and whole in the present. One approach that can be especially powerful in supporting this journey is EMDR Therapy, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

Although EMDR has been around for decades, it has gained more recognition in recent years as research and lived experiences continue to show how effective it can be for people navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, and other stress-related experiences.

How Our Brains Process Experiences

Most of the time, our brains and bodies know exactly how to process what happens to us. New information and experiences are filed away automatically, and we carry on. But when something overwhelming happens — a sudden trauma, ongoing stress, or repeated painful experiences — our natural coping system can become overloaded.

Instead of moving through and finding resolution, the memory can become “stuck.” It isn’t stored in the usual way but gets frozen in the brain and body in its raw emotional form. This is why we might not consciously recall every detail of a difficult event, but we still feel the physical sensations and emotional responses as though it were happening now. Our bodies carry that story even when our minds can’t fully access it.

This is also why current-day triggers can feel so intense. Something small — a sound, a look, a stressful situation — can light up our nervous system and make us react as though we are back in the original experience. We’re not responding to the present moment alone; we’re responding through the filter of what our nervous system remembers.

How EMDR Helps

EMDR Therapy is designed to help the brain finish the work it couldn’t do at the time of the overwhelming event. It supports the natural healing system to reprocess those “stuck” memories so they can be stored in a way that feels less overwhelming.

This doesn’t mean erasing memories or pretending something never happened. The memory itself remains, but the emotional charge — the distress, panic, or pain that feels too big to hold — becomes more manageable. Over time, these experiences stop holding the same power over our nervous system, and we can respond to present life with more clarity and calm.

Bilateral Stimulation

One of the core tools used in EMDR is bilateral stimulation. This simply means gently engaging both sides of the brain in an alternating rhythm. It can be done through eye movements, tapping, or tones.

When paired with focused therapeutic guidance, bilateral stimulation helps the nervous system process information in a more integrated way. Instead of the past looping in isolation, the memory can be linked with healthier, adaptive networks in the brain. Many clients describe it as finally being able to “file away” something that felt unfinished — no longer carrying the same intensity in their daily lives.

EMDR is More Than a Technique

It’s important to know that EMDR isn’t just about the eye movements or the tapping. Those are tools, but the therapy itself is a thoughtful and supportive process. A big part of EMDR is creating the foundation first — helping you feel grounded, safe, and resourced before ever touching the harder material.

Together, we build strategies to calm your nervous system, nurture a sense of inner safety, and strengthen the resilience you already carry. Then, when it feels right, we gently work with the memories or experiences that need healing. EMDR always moves at your pace.

Who Can Benefit?

EMDR can be helpful for people carrying many different kinds of pain or stress. This may include:

  • Trauma (single events or ongoing experiences)

  • Anxiety and panic

  • Depression

  • Grief and loss

  • Pain and somatic distress

  • Stress that feels “stuck” in the body

If you’ve ever noticed yourself reacting strongly in the present and wondered, “Why does this feel so big?”, EMDR may be worth exploring.

EMDR at Nurturing Roots

At Nurturing Roots Therapy, EMDR is one of the many ways we support nervous system healing. We approach it with the same values that guide all of our care: compassion, safety, and respect for your unique pace. We see EMDR as a doorway to help you feel more free in your body, more steady in your emotions, and more connected to who you truly are.

If you’re curious whether EMDR might be a good fit for you, we’d love to connect. You can book a free discovery call to ask questions and explore your options, or view all of our services to see how EMDR can be integrated with other supports we offer.

Healing is possible. Your nervous system already holds the capacity to move toward calm and balance — EMDR simply helps you access it.
